Dual Enrollment

DUAL ENROLLMENT

"Dual Enrollment" provides an opportunity for high school students to enroll in college courses while in high school. When a student meets the guidelines established by the Michigan Department of Education, Chelsea High School will assist with tuition and the student may receive high school and/or college credit for the work.

We pay an amount determined annually by a State formula. Typically this will cover the cost of courses through Washtenaw Community College (WCC) but not necessarily courses through other 4-year colleges/universities. You may still take courses there, but you will need to cover the difference in cost.

In order to be eligible for dual enrollment, a student must earn a minimum score on the SAT or the PSAT, as set by the different colleges.

This table shows the complete list of scores that help to qualify students for dual enrollment.

If a student does not meet that requirement, they can try taking the Accuplacer test at WCC, if they want to take a WCC course.

Qualified students need to meet with their counselor to fill out required application material in the spring for fall classes and by early December for winter classes.

The Michigan Postsecondary Enrollment Options Act states that:

"The purpose of this act is to provide a wider variety of options to high school pupils by encouraging and enabling qualified pupils to enroll in courses or programs in eligible postsecondary institutions. "

And that:

"If the eligible student first enrolls in a course under this act when the eligible student is in grade 9, not more than 2 courses during each academic year in the eligible student's first, second, or third academic year of enrollment under this act in an eligible postsecondary institution and not more than 4 courses during the academic year in the eligible student's fourth academic year of enrollment under this act in an eligible postsecondary institution "

Therefore, in order to pursue dual enrollment, a student must be enrolled  - at a minimum -

  • in 9th grade and can take a maximum of 10 college courses throughout his or her high school career.

  • If a student begins dual enrollment in 9th grade, the maximum number of courses per year is: 2 in 9th, 2 in 10th, 2 in 11th and 4 in senior year.

  • If a student begins with dual enrollment in 10th grade, the law limits courses to a maximum of 2 in 10th grade, 4 in 11th grade, and 4 in 12th grade.

  • If a student begins with dual enrollment in 11th grade, the law limits courses to a maximum of 4 - 6 in 11th grade, and 4 - 6 in 12th grade (with a maximum of 10 courses total)

  • If a student begins with dual enrollment in 12th grade, the law limits courses to a maximum of 6 courses in 12th grade (the student will not be able to get 10 courses in if they start in 12th grade).

If you believe you are eligible for dual enrollment, qualify for tuition and fee support, and wish to participate, contact your counselor.
