Types of Financial Aid

Grants

A source of financial aid that does not have to be repaid and is based on demonstrated need in your FAFSA. These come in the form of Federal, State, College, or Community Foundation awards.

Scholarships

A source of financial aid that does not have to be repaid. Scholarships are based on a wide range of criteria such as academics, athletics, talents, affiliations with community groups, or career aspirations.

Work Study

A needs-based student employment program in which eligible students work part-time and earn payroll wages to help fund their education-related expenses. These are Federal awards.

Loans

Loans are an option funding source for students and their parent(s) and must be repaid to

FINANCIAL AID 101 ~ an annual CHS presentation for parents of Juniors and Seniors in the fall. 

FINANCIAL AID 101 is an annual presentation for parents of juniors and seniors that will provide a basic understanding of state and federal student aid programs as well as other sources of financial aid that can help make higher education more affordable for families.  

WHEN:  Tuesday October 29, 2024 at 7:00 p.m.

WHERE: Chelsea High School Auditorium

PRESENTER:  The University of Michigan

Seniors planning to attend college and who plan to apply for financial aid need to file the FAFSA (Federal Application for Financial Aid)


FAFSA COMPLETION WORKSHOP ~ (hands on workshop to assist completing the FAFSA form)

  • FAFSA COMPLETION WORKSHOP will provide parents and students the opportunity to complete the Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA). 
  • Staff from the Michigan Department of Treasury will be on hand to walk you through the application, answer questions, and provide individual assistance. 
  • All students considering pursuing college or a trade or certificate program should complete a FAFSA each year they attend school. 
  • Completion of the FAFSA determines a student's eligibility to receive federal student aid. 
  • Think you don't qualify?  Many colleges require students to fill out the FAFSA to qualify for merit-based scholarships.

WHAT TO BRING: 
- Social Security Number (Student and Parent)
- Driver's License Number (if you have one)
- Alien Registration Number if you are not a U.S. citizen
- Federal tax returns (two-years prior to current academic year), W-2's, and other records of money earned (Student and Parent)
- Records of untaxed income (if applicable)
- Banking statements and records of investments (if applicable)
