Updates from Counseling for the week of 1/5/26 through 1/9/26
Week of 1/5/26 through 1/9/26
Scholarships
This week Mr. Mann, our scholarship chair, held a meeting with all seniors in the auditorium about local scholarship opportunities. An email to seniors and parents is being sent today. The email will include a copy of the presentation. The scholarship applications will open by the end of today.
Scheduling process
Next week, we will begin grade-level meetings to discuss requesting courses for next year. Students will have 2 weeks to work on their scheduling cards with parents, teachers, and counselors. Parents will need to sign the request sheet. Schedules are carefully built and balanced during this time, and once students return in the fall, schedules will be finalized and locked. At that point, we are unable to accommodate schedule change requests.
Students may request a schedule change only for legitimate reasons listed in the approved schedule change criteria (see below). All requests must be submitted during the schedule change window at the end of May/beginning of June. Approved schedule change criteria - educational reasons only:
- Received a C- or below in a previous class in the department
- Failed another class with this teacher
- There is a hole in the schedule
- Injury/Health issues – documentation required

SWWC Applications
Applications for the South West Washtenaw Consortium (career and technical education) courses for next year are open until January 30th. You can access applications here: https://www.salineschools.org/schools/high-school-9-12/swwc/information/forms--applications/ Then click on Chelsea SWWC Application. No requests will be accepted after the deadline. If your student wants to take one of these classes next year, they need to mark it on their schedule request sheet AND complete the separate SWCC application.
Next Steps for Seniors
- If you haven’t already, make sure to complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) - see Blog from the Week of 10/20/25 through 10/24/25 for instructions.
- Follow all communications from the colleges you applied to. They will email you at the email address you used on the Common App. They will let you know if you have been accepted, and if you have, they will ask you to set up an account with their university portal; this is where you will receive information about your financial aid package
- Information about Financial aid packages is typically released in February or March. Compare your financial aid offer letters.
- Once you select a college (the deadline to do so is May 1st, 2026), pay the deposit, and follow their checklist: apply for housing, attend orientation, etc.
- In May, Ms Kay will send you instructions for ordering your final official high school transcript. You need to send this transcript (it will go out at the end of June) or the university will prevent you from registering for your classes in the fall.
Groups
Our Peer 2 Peer and SAGA students meet weekly. We are currently running a DBT group and a CBT group about anxiety and depression to support our students. If you have a mental health concern for your student, please reach out to the assigned counselor for assistance:
